Oatmeal and Pumpkin Cookies Recipe

Oatmeal and Pumpkin Cookies Recipe

Dog Cookie Recipe

These are tried and true recipes to bake for your favorite pups. No matter what occasion:

Barkday, Gotcha Day, or just as a special treat, these cookie recipes are easy to make and use

kitchen equipment and ingredients you most likely already have.

Why bake your own dog cookies?

For the same reasons we started The Georgia Dawg Bakery. Many cookies you find at your

local pet store will have preservatives and ingredients you’ve never heard of. If you’re like us,

we want to give our dogs the freshest and healthiest treats possible. Also, I’ve always thought

that when you cook and bake for the ones that you love it enriches your soul and creates a

connection with those we feed. Why shouldn’t that apply to our fur children as well?

Ingredients to avoid & the Power of Flour

As well as any food we intake, please remember that everything in moderation is a good rule of

thumb to live by. And please remember to take your dog’s allergies into consideration.

Common dog allergies include chicken, eggs, soy and gluten.

It’s also important to mention common ingredients that are used in human foods that are toxic to

dogs. These include onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, caffeine,

and the sugar substitute Xylitol. If you’re unsure about using a certain ingredient there are

many websites you can visit. One that I check frequently is Camp Canine.

All of our recipes we use at the bakery use Organic Whole Wheat flour, but it can be substituted

with gluten-free flour in. I prefer to use King Arthur’s gluten-free flour because it is a 1:1 ratio for

substituting. For example, if a recipe says to use 1 cup of flour, you would use 1 cup of King

Arthur’s gluten-free flour.

Ingredients & Equipment

For this particular dog cookie recipe you will need the following:

Eggs (If your dog has an egg allergy, this can be omitted)

Vegetable Oil

Natural Honey

Whole Wheat Flour

Quick-Cooking Oats

Organic Pumpkin Puree (Unsweetened. Do not use the pumpkin puree that is made for

pumpkin pie as it contains sweetened condensed milk.)

Medium to large mixing bowl

Wooden spoon or spatula

Rolling pin

Baking sheet

Parchment paper

Cookie cutters, any shape will do

Oven

So now that you have your list of ingredients and equipment together, let’s get baking!

Oatmeal and Pumpkin Cookies

1 Egg, organic if possible

½ cup Vegetable oil

½ cup Water (if omitting egg, use ¾ cup of water)

2 cups Whole wheat flour

1 ½ cups Quick-cooking oats

1 ½ cups Organic unsweetened pumpkin puree

1.) Preheat your oven to 350 Fahrenheit

2.) Line your baking sheet with parchment paper

3.) In your mixing bowl combine all ingredients and use a spatula or wooden spoon to mix it

all together. If the mixture looks a little dry and isn’t coming together, add water ¼ cup at

a time until it starts to resemble a dough.

4.) Once mixed together, turn out onto a floured surface and knead. Alternatively you can

use a stand mixer with a paddle, in which case there’s no need for this step, just keep

paddling until the dough comes together. Let dough rest for 15 minutes.

5.) Using a rolling pin, flatten the dough out until it’s about ½ inch thick.

6.) Cut out cookies using your favorite cookie cutter. If you find your dough sticking or not

cutting cleanly, dip your cutter into a little bit of flour.

7.) Put the cookies 1 inch apart on your baking sheet.

8.) Place in the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes.

9.) By now, your dog should be standing behind you in your kitchen drooling for their fresh

baked treat. But before you give it to them, cool your cookies completely.

10.) If not using within the next 2-3 days, turn your oven off and leave the cookies in

for about 2-3 hours. This will dehydrate your cookies so that they have a longer shelf

life.

11.) Store in an airtight container and enjoy the look on your dog’s face when you

give them a cookie made with love.

Now that you have a basic dog cookie recipe you can bake these any time for your pups. If

you’d like you can frost your cookies with a greek yogurt and tapioca flour frosting. Make sure

to check back for dog-friendly frosting recipes!
